At the outset, what prompted you to agree to be an Ambassador to Save the Children India when Vipula Kadri, (National Director, Save the Children India) approached you, considering you are quite a busy person today? You have got to split your life in different things if you want to live a full and satisfactory life. I have always loved children and believed in the vision set by our esteemed President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, of a country that believes and fuels the dreams and hopes of its children and youth.

His vision inspired me to compose a song for our children. This anthem song has the conviction to touch each Indian with the belief to give voice to the children of India. Created on an iconic scale, this composition of mine uses the voice of the children and holds the promise of becoming a symbol of dreams of India's children.

It gives me immense pleasure to be commissioned by the Govt. of Gujarat to compose a song for the Gujarat Day celebrations. The song is called 'Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat' and has been written by noted writer Kavi Narmad. Other Gujarati writers on this song are Dilip Rawal, Ankit Trivedi, Sairam Dave & Chiragh Tripathi.

The Hindi version has been written by Prasoon Joshi.

The people of Gujarat are some of the nicest that I've come across whether in India or across the globe. Also, the fact that my wife is from Kutch, gave me additional impetus to compose this song. I sincerely hope this song helps people celebrate and come together as one.

The film is being directed by my long term associate Bharatbala who has demonstrated his unique vision and I'm looking forward to the video.

Border man - BSF Theme song – Behind The Story

The Border Security Force (BSF) jawans will now march to the beats of Oscar winner A R Rahman. The music composer, who enchanted the world with his `Jai Ho' number, has composed the theme song for the paramilitary force.

The five minute song — `Hum Seema Suraksha Bal... Veeron ka hai ye dal (We are the Border Security Force... it is the force of the brave)' (which is originally composed by Rahman as ‘Aazadi’ for the 2005 bollywood movie ‘Bose – forgotten hero’), praises the strength and valour of the force which is responsible for guarding the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders.

"The credit for the song goes to Meghalaya governor R S Moosahary, who is a former director-general of the force. He helped us get in touch with Rahman, who composed the song without charging any money for it," BSF chief M L Kumawat told reporters on the occasion of the force's investiture ceremony here on Thursday.

After being formally released on the occasion, the song, which also captures the emotional tribulations of a jawan guarding the border while leaving his family behind, comes with a video — titled `Borderman' — showing BSF men in action along the border, undergoing training and the famous `change of guard' ceremony at Wagah border.

Kumawat said: "The song and the video capture the true spirit of the force. Rahman has also promised to come and spend time with our men to boost their morale."

World Classical Tamil Conference Anthem – Behind The Story

“The Tamil was of a very high standard and I initially wondered how I was going to do it, but thankfully it has come out well.”

“It took two to two-and-a-half months, but we were working with a large crew – almost 70 singers,”

“All of us together worked on the anthem – There was TMS [T.M. Soundararajan], Yuvan [Shankar Raja], Shruti Hassan, P.Sushila…(to name a few). Basically, I have been busy in Hollywood and also touring. Therefore I was working on a tight schedule and was available only for two or three days, so people who could come then joined us,A new verse on Kamban and Avvaiyar was added almost when the composing was over, and had to be incorporated into the final cut.”

TMS begins with “Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum,” the first lines of the anthem composed by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Some of the other top playback artistes featuring in the anthem include Harini, Hariharan, Benny Dayal, Srinivas, Vijay Jesudas, Naresh Iyer. My nephew G.V.Prakash and sister Rehana have also joined the ensemble.

The thing about this anthem, is that it also features singers who have distinguished themselves in other genres of music such as Carnatic (Aruna Sayeeram, Bombay Jaishree, Nithyashree and Sowmya), folk, Sufi (M.Y.Abdul Ghani, Khajamoideen, S.Sabumoideen), and even rap (Blaaze). Another key aspect is that three generations of singers have participated.

I think you will hear the words in this song. In fact we have kept the instruments to a minimum so that the words are clear. The traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil blend melodiously with the guitar and drums, even as the carnatic notes wind seamlessly with the rap.
